This year’s FSWO Diversity and Inclusion Award is given to a long-standing fire service member, Chief Jeremy Parkin. Throughout his career, he has exemplified leadership and been a steadfast advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. His contributions as a mentor, instructor, and role model have left a lasting impact on his department, his community, and the broader Ontario fire service.
Chief Parkin has been instrumental in bringing forward new initiatives for diversity and inclusion through his leadership roles. As Vice President of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC), he spearheaded the creation of the OAFC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) Committee, a groundbreaking initiative for the organization. Under his guidance, the committee has developed a DEI toolkit to support Ontario fire departments in creating inclusive, equitable environments. His dedication has also strengthened ties with FSWO, ensuring that FSWO holds a formal role within OAFC, contributing to ongoing support and collaboration between the two organizations.
Chief Parkin actively champions the recruitment, retention, and advancement of underrepresented members in his department and recently promoted a female Deputy Chief—a significant milestone for the department. This Deputy Chief, promoted by him four times throughout her career, speaks highly of his encouragement and the unmatched support he provides to her and other female firefighters, including the department’s first female Training Officer. She says, “The support and encouragement that he gives to the growth and development of our staff is second to none.”
In addition to his impact within Ontario, Chief Parkin is a national advocate for inclusion. He serves on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC), extending his influence across Canada. His extensive work with First Nations organizations is particularly noteworthy. He collaborates to improve fire safety and service delivery within First Nations communities, emphasizing the importance of culturally aware and responsive fire services.
Chief Parkin is an exemplary leader whose work demonstrates the importance and value of diversity in the fire service. His dedication to fostering an inclusive environment within his department and on a provincial and national level inspires many.
