Fire Service Women Ontario (FSWO) has formally joined the national call for stronger fire service leadership and coordination by submitting letters to several federal ministers and opposition members in support of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs’ (CAFC) proposed National Fire Administration (NFA).
The CAFC proposal, issued amid another intense wildfire season, outlines the need for a federal body to coordinate local fire departments during emergencies and advise federal policy makers on fire and life safety across housing, infrastructure, energy, transportation, and climate portfolios.
FSWO’s letter reinforced the growing consensus that Canada is overdue for a coordinated fire governance structure—especially as other G7 nations already have similar systems in place.
Notably, FSWO received a response from the Prime Minister’s Office acknowledging our submission and stating the information would be forwarded to other relevant ministers. Those ministers were already directly contacted by FSWO—meaning our message reached their desks twice.
This moment underscores that FSWO’s voice—and the collective voice of Canada’s fire leaders—is being heard at the highest levels.
We are proud to support CAFC’s leadership and to continue advocating for a more inclusive, coordinated, and resilient fire service nationwide.
