Every detail tells a story.

Fire Service Women Ontario (FSWO) is proud to introduce our new Challenge Coin, a meaningful symbol of our history, our growth, and our continued commitment to supporting women in the fire service.

Designed by FSWO Board Member Kristy-Lynn Pankhurst, the coin was officially unveiled at our 2026 Annual Training Symposium as we celebrated an incredible milestone: surpassing 1,000 members!

We are excited to announce that the FSWO Challenge Coin is now available for purchase on the FSWO website for $20, including shipping and HST.

What began in Ottawa in 2009 with just three members has grown into a thriving community of women and allies from across Ontario and beyond. This coin celebrates how far we have come and the future we continue to build together.

A Design Filled with Meaning

Every element of the coin was thoughtfully chosen to reflect the people, places, and values that define FSWO.

Honouring Ontario and Our Canadian Roots

The landscape features Ontario's rugged shorelines, towering pines, open water, and the Toronto skyline. Inspired by the beauty of our province and the artwork of the Group of Seven, it represents the communities we serve.

The canoe recognizes its deep significance to Indigenous peoples and symbolizes connection, teamwork, respect, and moving forward together.

The white trillium, Ontario's provincial flower, and the maple leaves further connect the design to our provincial and Canadian identity.

Recognizing Women in Every Fire Service Role

Two women are featured prominently on the coin: one in structural firefighting gear and the other in a Chief Officer's uniform.

Together, they represent the many roles women hold throughout the fire service, including suppression, prevention, public education, communications, training, and leadership.

The medal worn by the Chief Officer is a tribute to the generations of women who have dedicated their careers to the fire service. Its ribbon colours reflect the Ontario Fire Services Long Service Medal, recognizing experience, service, and the women who helped pave the way.

A Message of Hope and Resilience

The sunset carries a particularly personal meaning for the coin's designer.

“The sun will rise again tomorrow.”

These words, shared with Kristy-Lynn by a respected professor during a difficult time, became a lasting reminder of hope, resilience, and the importance of continuing forward.

That message is now part of the coin's story.

Encourage. Educate. Empower.

Since FSWO was established in 2009, these three words have guided our organization.

We encourage women entering the fire service, educate and support one another, and empower women to pursue leadership opportunities and create meaningful change.

The reverse side of the coin features our commitment to Building Leaders & Driving Change, reflecting how our organization continues to grow and evolve.

As we celebrate more than 1,000 members, our mission remains as important as ever.

We honour the women who came before us, support those serving alongside us, and create opportunities for the next generation.
