Fire Service Women Ontario (FSWO) is proud to announce Deputy Chief Michele Fitzsimmons of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) as one of the 2025 recipients of the President’s Trailblazer Award. This award honours an individual whose courage, vision, and determination have blazed new paths in the fire service, paving the way for women leaders of today and tomorrow.
Michele Fitzsimmons exemplifies the very spirit of this award. As the first female Deputy Chief in FDNY history, she stands among the most senior-ranking women in the global fire service—a trailblazer whose 24-year career embodies leadership, mentorship, and service at the highest level. Her journey, inspired by her grandfather and great-grandfather, is one of perseverance, integrity, and groundbreaking achievement.
Michele’s legacy extends far beyond her operational leadership. She co-founded Phoenix Fire Camp, an initiative introducing young girls to firefighting and mentorship that continues to thrive today. Her vision sparked a ripple effect across borders: three Ottawa firefighters, inspired by their experience at Phoenix, returned home to establish Camp FFIT—a program that has since grown nationwide and became a catalyst for the creation of Fire Service Women Ontario (FSWO) itself. Michele has been part of FSWO’s story from the beginning, returning as an instructor, mentor, and steadfast supporter whose influence continues to shape generations.
Her leadership also extended to her two terms as President of FireFLAG/EMS, where she revitalized the organization and championed inclusion, mentorship, and advocacy for women and
LGBTQ+ members. She leaves behind a legacy of strengthened community and transformative leadership that will continue to endure.
Respected across the fire service for her quiet strength, professionalism, and authenticity, Michele is celebrated not only as a groundbreaking leader, but also as a mentor, teacher, and role model. She has consistently inspired others to pursue their full potential, maintained the highest ethical standards, and demonstrated unwavering dedication to building stronger, more inclusive fire services.
Through her trailblazing achievements, her vision for mentorship, and her lifelong commitment to advancing equity, Michele Fitzsimmons embodies the persona embraced by FSWO—building leaders and driving change. As President and on behalf of all of FSWO, we are honoured to recognize her extraordinary contributions with the 2025 President’s Trailblazer Award.
