Gwen started her career with the fire service in the dispatch center answering emergency calls and dispatching fire trucks and personnel to emergencies. After 6 years in the communications division she wanted to further her career within the fire service and was promoted to Fire Prevention Officer with the Ottawa Fire Services. As a Fire Prevention Officer she has investigated over 150 fires, enforced the Ontario Fire Code, and created and delivered public education programs. In 2015 she was promoted to Assistant Division Chief and now looks after the public education portfolio and inspections.
After being involved with the Eastern chapter of the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers Association (OMFPOF) she took on a position as a director for the Provincial executive. In 2017 she was voted in as Treasurer, and in June 2019 was elected President.
