This talk will review the published FIREWELL research and other related research on the musculoskeletal health and mental health of women firefighters. It will explore gender differences in musculoskeletal health and mental health among firefighters, and the factors that might explain these differences.

Joy MacDermid

Dr. Joy MacDermid, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor of Physical Therapy at Western University. She is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and The Royal Society of Canada; and a CIHR Gender Champion. Dr. MacDermid's research focuses on upper extremity function, musculoskeletal health, design and evaluation of surgical and rehab interventions/programs, public safety personnel health, work injury, implementation science, and the intersectional impact of sex and gender and other personal/social factors on health. She is the Scientific Director of FIREWELL, an independent knowledge translation platform and research collaborative with firefighters.
