Barrier to Entry: Navigating the Hiring Process with Intention

  • October 24, 2026
  • 1:00pm-2:50pm
  • FESTI -- 2025 Courtneypark Dr East, Mississauga, ON L5T 1J3

Facilitated by Jessica Crombie & Mike Berney

This session breaks down the fire service hiring process focusing on what departments are truly evaluating beyond minimum qualifications. The session teaches strategic versus generic preparation and explores how candidates can move beyond ‘checking boxes’ and begin preparing with strategy, clarity and intention. Additional topics include building your resume, how hiring actually works behind the scenes, who influences decisions versus who scores candidates, where subjective evaluation enters the process, and the ‘hidden competition’ layer where candidates are assessed not just on qualifications, but on perceived reliability, coachability, composure, and communication.

Participants will gain practical insight into resume and application development, behavioural and situational interview questions, and how departments assess communication, judgment, and cultural fit. Through real-world examples and interactive exercises, attendees will learn how to structure stronger interview responses, avoid common mistakes, and prepare more effectively for competitive hiring processes.

Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to position themselves as strong candidates and how to approach hiring as a strategic, long-term process rather than a single outcome.
