Join firefighters, officers, chiefs, instructors, students, and industry partners from across Canada and the United States for three days of exceptional training, leadership development, networking, and professional growth.

The 2026 Fire Service Women Ontario (FSWO) Annual Training Symposium will feature hands-on training, engaging classroom sessions, inspiring keynote speakers, and two exciting networking events—all hosted at Canada's premier fire service training facility.

About the Symposium

Every year, Fire Service Women Ontario (FSWO) hosts its Annual Training Symposium in a new community, bringing together fire service professionals to learn, connect, and grow. The 2026 Symposium at FESTI will offer an exceptional lineup of hands-on training (HOT), engaging classroom sessions, leadership development, wellness programming, and keynote presentations designed to strengthen skills and build leaders across the fire service.

Whether you work in suppression, fire prevention, communications, training, emergency management, or are a fire program student preparing to enter the profession, the Symposium offers practical learning and meaningful networking opportunities. Participants will explore emerging trends, innovative practices, and real-world strategies while connecting with colleagues from across North America.

The Symposium begins Thursday evening with our Trade Show & Networking Event, where attendees can meet industry partners, explore the latest products and services, and build valuable relationships with fire service professionals. On Friday evening, attendees are invited to join us for a fun and relaxed social networking event, providing another opportunity to connect, share experiences, and strengthen the relationships that make our fire service community so unique.

Hosted at FESTI's world-class training facility in Mississauga, the Symposium has earned a reputation for delivering high-quality education in an inclusive and welcoming environment. The event has sold out for the past three consecutive years, with attendance and industry participation continuing to grow each year.

The Symposium also features sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities, providing organizations with the chance to connect directly with fire service leaders, instructors, and front-line professionals while supporting leadership development, education, and inclusion throughout the fire service.

Resilient Minds - Building the Psychological Strength of Fire Fighters

The Resilient Minds^TM 8-hour course contains four modules that were developed by fire fighters for fire fighters to increase the ability to:

• Recognize the effects of psychological stress/trauma in self and peers
• Understand trauma-informed practices
• Communicate with peers who may be struggling
• Using evidence-based trauma informed approach to respond, safely, and appropriately to distressed citizens
• Apply personal strategies for managing stress, mitigating trauma, and boosting resilience

** This session can be added on to any symposium package at no extra cost

Highrise Fire Fighting -- HOT

Facilitated by Phil Montgomery, Rob Wiggins & Maurice Doyle

This high-rise class will build off of Brent Brooks class from last year. The course will focus on the hose deployment, improvised hose deployment, open well stretch, closed well and making the stretch in the hallway. Setting the gate gauge and flowing water with the 65mm line. It will also cover Plan A,B,C,D in supplying water in a high rise setting. This course will cover multiple different hose bundles and some of the advantages and disadvantages. We will help crush the negative coffee table chat about high rise fire fighting.

Make Search Primary Again will cover the search mindset, the data and real-world examples behind the 'Why', and the tactics and skills that will maximize your effectiveness. You will receive supportive, focused, hands-on instruction on Solo 24' Ground Ladder Deployment, Masking-up, Window Initiated Search, Search Team Movement and Body Mechanics, and Victim Movement with Transition from Window to Ladder to Ground. The day will culminate with successful scenarios in crews of 4.

This HOT session will have three different stations, all geared towards past, present and future applications, enabling all attendees from any department to benefit from the content.

1. Advanced lifting and stabilization

2. The right approach- Patient centered extrication

3. Past practices and their continued use today

All levels from beginner to advanced is welcome to attend and benefit from this course.

Rescue Drag Bonanza -- HOT

Facilitated by Jessica Clermont

Life safety is our #1 fireground priority. We will start the day in class looking at search techniques to locate occupants. The majority of the class will focus on learning rescue drags for various situations including: feet first drags, head first drags, dragging occupants with webbing, and options for large occupants. We will finish the class with a few scenarios, so you can practice what you’ve learned. As firefighters, we take ownership of the problems of people that we serve. This is why we search. Are you ready to make the rescue?

Fireground Fitness Through Flowing -- HOT

Facilitated by Nicole Brugger, Heidi Jaaskelainen, Mya Falcon & Sierra Henderson-Muschett

Often, nozzle work is an overlooked skill as a firefighter. We are simply given the nozzle and told GO! When the nozzle reaction is challenging, we are told this is the way it is. In this course, you will gain confidence and core strength through owing out of 45mm and 65mm nozzles and acting as a back-up person. You will start with 3 basic positions on your left and right sides, and we will increase the difficulty through repetition and proper techniques until you can ow and move with ease. This course is designed for beginners or seasoned firefighters. We tailor to you. Last year, we had 100% success rate with our participants!

Ladder Confidence -- HOT

This class is all about sets and reps. The more you practice a skill, the more competent you will become, and competence breeds confidence. We will review basic ladder carries and throws (including high and low shoulder), roof ladder deployment, and various ladder tricks I’ve picked up throughout my career. Come join us for a half day of ladder basics in a judgment free environment, because “making mistakes is better than faking perfection”.

Aircraft Rescue Firefighting: Tactics, Entry, and Live-Fire Operations -- HOT

Facilitated by Victoria Lam

Experience the unique world of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting through a combination of classroom learning and live-fire training. Participants will explore ARFF strategies, aircraft fire behaviour, and airport emergency operations before taking part in hands-on scenarios involving exterior fire attack, interior search and rescue, and coordinated suppression. The session concludes with a close-up look at the powerful Rosenbauer Panther ARFF apparatus, providing a practical introduction to aviation emergency response.

You will gain an understanding of how the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal conducts fire and explosion investigation. This session introduces foundational fire science and fire dynamics, investigative methodologies, scene analysis, and evidence collection. You will gain insight into the origin and cause determination process, understand the roles and responsibilities within provincial investigations, and explore how findings support public safety and legal outcomes. By the end, you will be able to recognize key principles of fire behavior, understand the investigative process, and appreciate the role of evidence in determining origin and cause.

We'll recognize outstanding individuals and organizations, celebrate the accomplishments of the past year, and honour those whose leadership, dedication, and support are making a lasting difference.

Fire Service Women Ontario is honoured to welcome Sandra Perron as a keynote speaker for the 2026 Symposium.

As Canada's first female infantry officer, Sandra Perron has spent her career breaking barriers, leading under pressure, and demonstrating the resilience required to succeed in demanding, high-performance environments. Her experiences in the Canadian Armed Forces, combined with her work as the founder and Executive Director of the Pepper Pod, a retreat centre for women veterans, offer powerful lessons that resonate with today's fire service.

Sandra also has a special connection to the fire service through her father, who served as a Fire Marshal with the Canadian Armed Forces for more than 40 years

Firefighters know that leadership isn't defined by rank—it's built through trust, teamwork, courage, and the ability to make difficult decisions when the stakes are high. Sandra's keynote explores what it takes to lead through adversity, build resilient teams, foster inclusive workplaces, and support the people beside you, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Sandra is the bestselling author of Out Standing in the Field: A Memoir by Canada's First Female Infantry Officer, and her story has also been brought to the screen in the feature film Out Standing. Her journey is one of perseverance, service, and determination—qualities that are at the heart of the fire service.

Discover how to make entry using less force. This hands-on course teaches non-destructive and semi-destructive entry techniques that preserve property, improve customer service, and maintain door control—and in certain situations can outperform traditional forcible entry in speed and precision.

You'll learn when and why to choose these methods, gaining real-world skills with professional tools on realistic entry props. Get practical experience using bypass tools, lock picks, the Raptor cylinder pulling tool and more. This course adds valuable skills that you can use on the job.

How did you feel about the success of the water supply at your last rural fire? Getting your water supply set up right at a rural fire can make the difference in how quickly you can be successful or frustrated. In this HOT course we explore a number of different rural water set ups and scalable set-ups, including porta tanks and rural hitches (Clappered Siamese). This course will include a classroom presentation, table top dioramas and HOT demonstrations. We will also discuss different adaptations and strategies depending on the equipment available to your department.

Modern Fire Dynamics and Suppression Techniques

Fire dynamics is the at the core of firefighting yet, it is one of the most misunderstood sciences due to excessive definitions, long standing explanations and lack of applicable knowledge. This course threads the concepts together in small tabletop activities and a colourful PowerPoint which will be followed by a fireground practical session on suppression techniques to combat the dynamics you will encounter.

Fireground Fitness Through Flowing is a recommended asset prior to taking this course due to the flowing aspect and short duration of time.

You will get wet in this class, bring a spare change of clothes.

When I Doubt Myself and Other Women - Confronting Internalized Sexism - Part One

Any rank or role in the fire service demands self-confidence, and trust of one’s own knowledge and capabilities. Most fire service women have successfully challenged sexist comments, behaviors, and policies to get their positions, but internalized sexism often still holds us back. The lifetime of sexist messages has us doubt our judgment, competence, and leadership capacity. This workshop will examine how self-doubt affects our leadership, training, support of other women firefighters, and separates us. You’ll be offered strategies to identify and to confront internalized sexism – to help every woman, at any level of the fire service – perform her very best.

HazMat Isn’t Optional Anymore: Modern Threats Every Firefighter Must Understand

Today's front-line firefighters are responding to an evolving range of hazards that extend far beyond traditional fire suppression. From lithium-ion battery and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) incidents to rail transportation emergencies, clandestine drug labs, and the growing threat of fentanyl being used as a weapon of mass destruction, today's risks demand a new level of awareness and preparedness.

This session focuses on what firefighters across Canada need to know to recognize these emerging hazards, understand the risks, and operate safely.
