For people to own what they do each day they must belong and creating that ownership starts long before their first day. It is more than HR DEI training and more than leadership taking the position of diversifying their fire service. All levels of the fire service have a responsibility to ensure people belong, but most importantly you can have way more impact than you think.
Mark is the Division Chief of Training for Ottawa Fire Services. He has been a volunteer firefighter, volunteer captain, career firefighter, and career training officer. He has been committed to inclusion for over 17 years and been involved in fire service, city, and private programs intended to create belonging. Mark also has extensive experience in outreach and recruitment, key aspects to finding the right people for our service. His approach blends his decades of experience in the fire service with his education in human factors and design.
