This intensive, 8-hour Hands-On Training (H.O.T.) course is designed to introduce participants to the foundational skills of technical rope rescue. Aligning with the standard of NFPA 1006, Chapter 5 , this course bridges the gap between theory and practical, real-world application.L
Learning Objectives
By the end of this 8-hour session, participants will be able to:
- Understand Component Safety: Inspect, maintain, and properly utilize standard rope rescue equipment, including PPE, life-safety ropes, and hardware including carabiners, pulleys, and descent control devices.
- Essential Knots: Efficiently tie, dress, and safety-check critical rescue knots, bends, and hitches.
- Build Anchor Systems: Construct single-point and multi-point anchor systems suitable for various rescue environments.
- Construct lowering and raising systems: Manage the critical phase of moving a load or rescuer over an edge safely and efficiently.
- Construct Mechanical Advantage: Design and operate simple and compound mechanical advantage systems (e.g., 3:1, 5:1) to raise and lower loads safely.
Who Should Attend
Firefighters who are new to technical rope rescue or those looking to align their current department skillsets with NFPA 1006 Chapter 5 competencies.
PPE Requirements:
Participants must bring long pants (ie. coveralls, or station wear), appropriate gloves for rope rescue (leather palmed, dexterity for tying knots), steel-toe boots, and safety glasses.
Students are welcome to bring their own helmet and / or harness however it is not necessary. Harnesses and helmets will be provided.
